Honestly, it hurt to leave the island. I long to return.
I've been to a lot of tropical resorts -- Oahu, Maui, Tahitti, Bora Bora, Jamaica, The Bahamas -- and nothing compares to the experience I had on Long Caye Resort. I loved everything about it: the fact that it is a small private island far from civilization; the beautiful, rustic, solar and wind-powered facilities; the seemingly endless number of water sports to learn and explore; the fact that the staff obviously enjoyed and were skilled at teaching their small group of clients not only about the different sports but also about the environment; the food; the games; the lazy, laid-back evenings. But the number one thing I loved most about Long Caye was the place itself.
Slickrock is a great travel company. Highly rated with a dedicated and experience staff!
Glover's Reef is unique -- truly one of the most pristine, biologically diverse and most easily explored tropical underwater coral reef playgrounds in the world. And of the four islands on Glover's Reef, Long Caye is the least commercial, most laid-back, most quiet and natural of them all. I loved all the things I did during my week there, but my favorite was probably also the simplest -- snorkeling directly from shore. I think I spent 20 hours in the water the last two days of my stay there. The number of marine species there is unparalleled, seemingly endless, and so easily approached. My favorite was the enormous spotted eagle ray that I "flew" with for 20 minutes just as my stay on the island was coming to a close. I felt like I'd only just begun to explore the depths of the place.
